Astronomy 101 followed by live from Gemini North

Tim Napier-Munn as Chair

AAQ

Astronomy 101 is an opportunity for those who love the night sky but aren't quite sure how to start in astronomy to hear from experienced observers about some of the basics: what is there to see in the night sky? buying your first telescope (or binoculars); observing hints; observing variable stars, double stars, and occultations; photographing the sky; resources on the internet. Come along and hear how you can enjoy astronomy by making your own observations.

This is a great opportunity for anyone starting off, or getting into a new area of astronomy, or just to attend the primers before going to the session in the convention to improve your basic understanding of any of the topics.

Astronomy 101 will be held in the Parnell lecture theatre (Room 222) at Queensland University. It will be in two sessions 11:00 to 12:30 when there will be a lunch break and from 13:30 to 15:00. Note that you will have to arrange for your own lunch.

At 15:30 there will be a live link to the 8 metre Gemini North telescope in Hawaii. Now that is some real aperture!
There is no charge for Astronomy 101 and for the live link to Gemini North and there is no need to register.
