Presentation Types and Submission

There are many formats for making a presentation, as detailed below. The Programme Committee will be pleased to discuss any aspect of content or presentation style with you.

Oral Addresses

These are papers or short lectures, or you may wish to make a software demonstration. These will occur on the Saturday and Sunday of NACAA.

Choose your length: 15 or 30 minutes time slots, but allow up to a third of the time for discussion. The shorter time slot may be ideal for reports.

Consider also organising some of your collaborators from around Australia to present a cluster of short reports on the same theme.

Please fill in the NACAA XXIV proposal form if you wish to make an oral address.

Please supply an abstract of your presentation, at most 200 words, with your application as indicated on the form. The abstract should provide a motivation for the presentation, say what it is about, indicate the major points being made, and a conclusion. The Programme Committee will decide on the acceptance of your presentation based on this abstract. You will have a chance to modify it nearer the date of the conference, for inclusion in the convention programme, the NACAA web site and on the convention DVD.

Oral presenters usually have a computer-based visual accompaniment to their address, e.g. using PowerPoint™. We also encourage you to provide us with a written "paper" to accompany your address. We hope that you will grant permission to include your presentation material in the convention DVD. for inclusion on the convention DVD and the NACAA web site.

The NACAA organisers will provide a presentation computer for your use. Please let us know if you need any special equipment, software or internet access for your presentation. We discourage presenters from using their own computers to facilitate quick changeovers at the end of each presentation.

Posters

Posters can take many forms, limited only by your artistic imagination. A poster doesn’t need to be all on one big sheet – for instance you can illustrate flows and processes by joining separate cardboard cutouts with ribbons. But do try to make them as visual as possible and arresting from a distance. Consider write-in spaces for comments by your viewers, consider tear-offs of useful Web addresses or other information. The idea is to communicate, and that need not be one-way.

Posters are great for displaying things that need more study than can be accommodated in an address – images or diagrams, processes, research results. Talk to the Programme Committee about your ideas, if you wish.

There will be a time-slot in the main programme for all poster presenters to give a few minute talk on their poster: what it’s about, what it concludes, why it matters, will you join my project?

Please fill in the NACAA XXIV proposal form if you wish to present a poster.

Please supply an abstract of your poster, at most 200 words, with your application as indicated on the form. The abstract should provide a motivation for the poster, say what it is about, indicate the major points being made, and a conclusion. The Programme Committee will decide on the acceptance of your poster based on this abstract. You will have a chance to modify it nearer the date of the convention, for inclusion in the convention programme, the NACAA web site and on the convention DVD.

Round-Tables

These are half-hour or one-hour (or perhaps longer) discussions in break-out rooms, convened and chaired by their organiser. As much as possible they will be scheduled on the Saturday and Sunday, but probably out of the times for oral presentations.

Do you have an educational programme you want to promote nationwide? Do you want to plan a collaborative research programme? How about just getting together everyone in your special field to tell each other what you’re doing?

If you are organising a round-table, consider contacting people you want to attend and preparing an agenda jointly.

Please fill in the NACAA XXIV proposal form if you wish to host a round-table discussion.

Please supply an abstract of your presentation, at most 200 words, with your application as indicated on the form. The abstract should provide a motivation for the round-table, say what it is about, indicate the major points to be discussed, and suggest the outcomes. The Programme Committee will decide on the acceptance of your round-table based on this abstract. You will have a chance to modify it nearer the date of the convention, for inclusion in the convention programme, the NACAA web site and the convention DVD.

Also supply the following details on the form:

  1. How many attendees you expect (or say if you want to limit the numbers) and whether it will be by your invitation or open to any convention attendee.
  2. Whether you want a half-hour or one-hour meeting. Longer ones are possible but may be difficult to timetable. Please consult with the Programme Chair first.
  3. Any special equipment, software or internet access needed.

Workshops

These are aimed specifically at training, skill improvement, etc. and should be as interactive as possible. Workshops can be 2-hour, half-day or full-day, and would normally take place on the Friday or the Monday.

Attendees will be expected to sign up for these beforehand, and as presenter you may require them to bring laptops or other equipment. Attendees will be charged a fee for Friday/Monday workshops to cover room hire, catering, materials etc.

Please fill in the NACAA XXIV proposal form if you wish to organise a workshop.

Please supply an abstract of your workshop, at most 200 words, with your application as indicated on the form. The abstract should provide a motivation for the workshop aimed at getting just the people that you want to attend. Also, indicate the major topics to be covered, and what skills or capabilities an attendee can be expected to acquire. The Programme Committee will decide on the acceptance of your workshop based on this abstract. You will have a chance to modify it nearer the date of the convention, for inclusion in the convention programme, the NACAA web site and the convention DVD.

Also supply the following details on the form:

  1. Whether you want a 2-hour, half-day or full-day meeting. Shorter ones e.g. one-hour will be considered but may be difficult to timetable. Please consult with Programme Chair first.
  2. How many attendees you expect (or say if you want to limit the numbers).
  3. A list of what you require/expect (state which) attendees to bring.
  4. A list of the materials you will provide for each attendee (e.g. printed workshop notes, CD/DVD of your slides or software).
  5. Any special equipment, software or internet access needed.

If your workshop is accepted, then an itemised list of costs of the materials that you will provide should be sent to the Programme Chair. The convention organisers will endeavour to reimburse this partly or fully, depending on the overall convention financial situation.

Note that workshop proposals must be submitted by the close off date of Friday, 27th November, 2009, to allow time for attendees to enrol. No late submissions will be accepted for workshops.
